Intravenous Vitamin C (IVC)
IVC, an essential antioxidant and contributor of optimal immune function has always been essential when it comes to making it a part of a healthy diet. Most experts would agree that incorporating fruits and vegetables high in Vitamin C or by oral supplementation is a widely accepted health benefit. Scientifically known as ascorbic acid, the popular vitamin has also been gaining attention for its use in cancer treatment practices. The practice of incorporating IVC falls under the scope of orthomolecular medicinal treatments. Orthomolecular medicine is the practice of balancing naturally occurring substances back into the body for optimal function. The disease alters the functioning of body by intensifying the consumption of essential vitamins and minerals, and therefore in many cases depletes the body.
Differentiating the use of basic oral supplements found in the marketplaces and what is administered in our clinic is important for our patients to understand. When IVC is applied into the clinical structure, we are able to infuse Vitamin C to efficiently bring up plasma levels to therapeutic concentrations. Vitamin C deficiency is common among advanced cancer patients. In addition clinical trials show a lowered vitamin C absorption due to cancer-related treatments. Vitamin C is intensely stored into the soft tissues of the adrenal glands and white blood cells leaving the patient still deficient at the serum plasma levels. With IVC, there is a greater potentiality of benefits such as the induction of cell apoptosis via direct cytotoxic effects to the cancer cells and the inhibition of angiogenesis. It has been proven that there is a coordinated link between low plasma levels of Vitamin C and elevated C reactive protein levels in the body (inflammation).
In many clinical studies, Vitamin C has shown to assist those with cancer in various capacities. Amber Life and Integrative Medicine Cancer Clinic actively weaves the practice of orthomolecular medicine into our healing spaces. Why do we do this? Because we know that complementary healing modalities paired with scientifically sound medical treatments will transform into the best quality life for our patients.
Our clinic embraces the practice of IVC and incorporates this into our treatment regimens primarily because of the following scientific findings:
- Intravenous Vitamin C, cancer cell death seems to occur more preferentially especially combined with other immuno-therapeutic interventions and virotherapies.
- Intravenous Vitamin C assists cancer patients to tolerate the side effects of other systemic treatment modalities and achieve a greater feeling of wellness.
- Intravenous Vitamin C decrease inflammation and assist in halting tumor growth as shown in cell markers.
In January 2018, there was a published study highlighting the results of using IV Vitamin C alongside other virotherapy type treatments. The overall enthusiasm from the oncological community is that used in adjunctive care, IVC shows significant efficacy in the lysing of tumor cells and assists to prolong life. It may also serve in a two-pronged treatment approach as in it may prevent recurrence.
